Two Arrested In Beaufort West After Police Seize Illegal Firearm And Dagga Worth R110,000

Two men have been arrested in Beaufort West following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and dagga with an estimated street value of R110,000 during a late-night vehicle checkpoint operation.

The Beaufort bust occurred on April 12 at approximately 11:15pm when officers from the Central Karoo District Flying Squad and Beaufort West SAPS stopped a passenger bus on Donkin Street.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies confirmed that the Beaufort operation was part of a broader strategy to combat the flow of illegal firearms, drugs, and contraband into the Western Cape.

During a search of the bus, officers discovered a concealed firearm inside a bag.

Further inspection led to the recovery of 12 packs of dagga hidden in another bag on board.

Suspects, Aged 46 And 54, Face Firearm And Drug Charges

The two suspects, aged 46 and 54, who are reportedly related, were arrested at the scene after the illegal items were positively linked to them.

The arrested Beaufort suspect remains in custody and are expected to make their first court appearance soon.

The pair face serious charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and dealing in drugs.

Sergeant Spies praised the officers involved in the successful operation, highlighting their vigilance and professionalism during the search.

Police To Intensify Checkpoints Over Easter Weekend

The Western Cape provincial police management has commended the team for the bust and confirmed that similar operations will be stepped up across the province, especially with the Easter weekend approaching.

“The strategic deployment of resources will be stepped up across the province,” said Spies. “We are committed to removing illegal weapons and drugs from our communities.”

Authorities have urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement as checkpoints and patrols are increased to ensure public safety.
