Twelve Killed, 45 Injured In East Rand Bus Crash

At least twelve people have died, and 45 others were injured in a tragic bus crash on the East Rand. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning on the R21 northbound near the OR Tambo International Airport interchange after the R24. Four lanes have been closed, causing severe traffic delays. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid the area.

Details of the Crash

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed the incident. “A bus has jackknifed, rolled several times, and unfortunately, in that accident, we have accounted thus far for twelve fatalities, all of them adults—nine males and three females,” Ntladi said.

The crash comes just a day after another devastating accident in the region. On Monday, four primary school boys lost their lives in a horrific collision on the N12 in Ekurhuleni.

School Transport Crash

The Monday accident occurred while the pupils were on their way to school from Daveyton. Authorities received reports of the collision at around 7:45 a.m.

Ntladi described the scene: “When we arrived, we found a scholar transport vehicle, a Toyota Verso, and a private vehicle, a Toyota Hilux bakkie. Children were trapped in the scholar transport vehicle. Four of the children were declared dead, while another four were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.”

The driver of the scholar transport vehicle was reportedly unharmed.
