Suspect Armed with Multiple Weapons

Security officers opened fire on the suspect, who was later detained at the scene.

“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said at a press conference following the incident.

He added: “They seem to think he was a lone wolf, and I feel that too.”

Officials said the suspect was carrying a shotgun, a handgun and knives. One Secret Service officer was struck during the exchange of gunfire but was protected by a vest and is not believed to be critically injured.

Investigation Underway as Security Questions Raised

Washington police chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed that law enforcement exchanged fire with the suspect.

“Law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the individual. A US Secret Service uniformed division officer was struck in his vest. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He appears to be in good spirits,” Carroll said.

The incident unfolded during dinner, before Trump was scheduled to address the audience. Guests reportedly took cover as security teams moved swiftly to secure the venue.

Cabinet members were evacuated, and police cordoned off the hotel while helicopters hovered overhead.

Trump later said he initially mistook the sound of gunfire for a dropped tray and indicated that the event would be rescheduled.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
