Tributes Pour In As Late Nathi Mthethwa’s Remains Return To KwaZulu-Natal

The mortal remains of former South African ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, arrived in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday afternoon. The seasoned politician passed away in Paris last week.

Family members, former colleagues, and friends gathered at King Shaka International Airport to receive the late diplomat. A brief service was held at the airport, followed by a memorial service organised by the African National Congress (ANC) later in the day.

Friends and Colleagues Honour Nathi Mthethwa

Mthethwa, remembered as a dedicated public servant, will be laid to rest on Sunday in KwaMbonambi, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Among those present at the airport were his former colleagues, including former ministers, who came to pay their respects.

During his tenure as Minister of Police, Mthethwa worked alongside then-National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele. Reflecting on his time in office, Cele highlighted key achievements under Mthethwa’s leadership.

“Quite several teams were formed, that was one of them TRT (Amabharethe). The other team that was formed was the tracking team in Gauteng, whose responsibility was to track all the people who were wanted by the detectives so that they could face the law,” Cele said. He also lauded Mthethwa for his lifelong commitment to public service.

Following the airport ceremonies, Mthethwa’s body will be transported to Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal for final funeral proceedings. Tributes continue to flow from all corners of the province as friends, family, and political colleagues prepare to say their final goodbyes.
