Trial Begins For Man Accused Of Sexually Abuse Of Niece And Nephew In The 1980s

The trial of a 53-year-old man accused of sexually abusing his niece and nephew during the 1980s has officially begun in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court. The accused faces 15 charges, including rape and indecent assault, but has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

According to court documents, the alleged abuse began in 1986 when the female victim was just four years old. Her older brother, who was eight at the time, reportedly witnessed the incidents severally involving his sister.

Survivors’ Testimonies and Legal Delays

On February 12 and 13, the female victim, now in her 40s, testified in court, recounting the traumatic experiences from her childhood. Her brother is expected to take the stand later in the trial.

This case is one of South Africa’s few historic familial sexual abuse trials to reach the courtroom, highlighting the difficulties survivors face when seeking justice decades later. Prosecutors argue that the accused has deliberately delayed legal proceedings for years by leveraging financial resources.
