Transport Department Unveils Festive Season Road Safety Strategy For 2025

The Department of Transport has introduced a new festive season safety strategy aimed at protecting drivers, pedestrians and passengers as traffic volumes rise across the country.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy officially launched the campaign on Sunday along the N1 highway in Kroonstad, marking the start of intensified national efforts to curb road fatalities.

According to the department, 800 national traffic police officers will be deployed to high-risk provinces, including Gauteng, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

This comes as South Africa reports at least 9,400 road deaths so far in 2025 — a figure 700 lower than during the same period last year.

Heightened Law Enforcement in High-Risk Provinces

Creecy emphasised that the festive strategy places strong focus on increasing visibility of law enforcement to deter dangerous driving behaviour.

The additional policing capacity is expected to support routine patrols, roadside checks and compliance operations throughout the season.

Expanded Public Awareness and Community Engagement

The minister added that public education remains a core part of the department’s plan to reduce fatalities.

“We will step up public awareness campaigns through multiple media and community channels.

“The education and awareness campaign will be pursued to ensure that road safety messages reach all communities and various road users at train stations, bus and taxi ranks, exhibitions at malls and shopping centres, community halls, churches, toll gates and rest stops, sports events, and border posts.”

The Transport Department hopes that the combined effort of increased enforcement and widespread communication will encourage responsible road use during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
