Transformer Explosion Injures Three In New Doornfontein, Johannesburg

Three people were left injured on Monday morning after a transformer fire triggered a structural collapse in New Doornfontein, east of Johannesburg.

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said the incident occurred at about 6am on Lower Railway Road, at the corner of Staib Street.

Emergency crews arrived to find an electrical box engulfed in flames and immediately moved in to contain the fire, according to EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo.

Transformer Fire Confirmed as Cause of New Doornfontein Incident

Khumalo confirmed that the transformer was located inside a compact utility storage room.

“The transformer was housed in a small utility storage room.”

She explained that the blast from the incident caused significant damage to surrounding structures.

“The explosion allegedly resulted in the collapse of the room and an adjoining boundary wall.”

EMS Dispels Gas Explosion Claims as City Power Takes Over

EMS dismissed circulating social media claims that a building had collapsed or that a gas explosion was responsible, confirming the fire was electrical in nature.

Khumalo said emergency services accounted for all residents in the area and confirmed injuries at the scene.

“Three people were injured and transported by Gauteng Provincial Government ambulance services to nearby hospitals.”

She added that the matter has since been handed over to City Power, while EMS continues to remain on site to support investigations.

The exact cause of the transformer fire has not yet been established.
