Tragic N3 Crash Claims 18 Lives, Survivors Battle for Life Amid Rising Road Carnage

A devastating collision involving a truck, a taxi, and another vehicle claimed the lives of 18 people on Monday night on the N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass in KwaZulu-Natal. Among the deceased were 13 adults and five children, while a baby miraculously survived but remains in critical condition.

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed the tragedy, which occurred around 8:30 PM. The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, with investigations underway by the RTMC and police. “The cause of the crash is unknown and will be subject to investigation,” Zwane stated.

Rising Road Deaths Spark Concern

Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and stressed the need for immediate action to address the growing number of road accidents.

He acknowledged the concerning rise in incidents along key routes such as the N3 and N2, exacerbated by heavy rainfall creating hazardous driving conditions.

“Since January 1, more than 10 people have died on our roads. With the rain, the roads are slippery. We are requesting motorists to be extra careful,” Duma said.

Government Response to Heavy Rainfall

Duma highlighted reports of potential flooding in low-lying areas due to ongoing rainfall and shared updates on government efforts to mitigate the impact. He has engaged with departmental heads to review contingency plans aimed at ensuring public safety.

The Department of Human Settlements, in collaboration with its national counterpart, is providing urgent relief to municipalities affected by flooding. “About eight temporary residential units are being procured to assist families whose houses were totally destroyed in Nkandla. Four other families will receive building materials,” Duma revealed.

Duma urged motorists to exercise extra caution, particularly in adverse weather conditions. A dedicated road traffic inspection team, working closely with municipalities, is actively monitoring traffic flow on major routes to enhance safety.
