Tragic End: Two Toddlers Found Locked In Car Boot

Two young cousins, Kokeletso Mataung and Itumeleng Moagi, were found locked inside the boot of a Mercedes-Benz in the back of a mechanic’s yard in the Valspan informal settlement in the Northern Cape.

The incident came to light two days after the children were reported missing, sparking a frantic search by community members and the police.

The discovery was made by Frederik van Zyl, a farmer who joined in the search. Van Zyl was alerted to the banging sound coming from the car by his neighbour, Baby Phatsoane.

It was Phatsoane who heard the four-year-old Itumeleng trying to get out of the car from inside her home. The boot of the car was shut, making it impossible for the children to escape.

When the surviving toddler, Itumeleng, was found, he was weak and dehydrated. Although he has been discharged from the hospital, he remains too traumatized to speak.

The families of the cousins have called for an investigation into the possibility of kidnapping, while community members speculate that the children may have been targeted for a muti killing.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, confirmed that an inquest has been opened into the death of Kokeletso Mataung.
