Tragic Discovery Of Woman’s Body In Flooded Umbilo River

Rescuers on Friday morning, discovered the body of a woman and the mangled remains of her car in the Umbilo River near Sarnia, west of Durban.

This followed a night of intense rainfall across KwaZulu-Natal, which resulted in severe flooding.

The downpour on Thursday caused several roads, including those in Kloof, Hillcrest, Springfield, Reservoir Hills, Isipingo, Verulam, and Tinley Manor, to become impassable due to rising waters.

The search for the vehicle and its occupant, believed to be a woman in her 50s, had to be suspended Thursday night due to the dangerous, raging waters of the Umbilo River.

Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics reported that rescuers resumed their efforts at first light on Friday.

He said, “We had to wait until daylight to continue the search safely,”

“The river’s strength made it impossible to conduct the search in the dark.”

Finding Vehicle And The Victim

The vehicle was eventually located just under a bridge in Gordon Road, off Stapleton Road, around 2 a.m.

As rescue teams and the fire department reached the wreckage, they found the woman’s body inside the car, which had been severely damaged by the powerful waters.

“The damage to the vehicle indicates the force of the flooding,” Jamieson noted.

“It is clear the river had overflowed significantly, and the car was swept away in the night,” he said.

Authorities confirmed the woman, believed to be in her 50s, had suffered fatal injuries due to the severity of the crash.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the extreme weather conditions that struck KwaZulu-Natal, where several areas were hit by dangerous flooding and road blockages.

Flooded Roads Cause Major Disruptions

In the aftermath of Thursday’s rainfall, many roads across the region became waterlogged or blocked with debris.

Jamieson urged motorists to exercise caution, as roads were still hazardous, with several routes either submerged or obstructed.

“We received multiple calls about waterlogged roads and debris blocking passage,” Jamieson said, urging the public to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
