Tragedy In Limpopo: Grade R Girl, 5, Killed By Scholar Transport Bus

A five-year-old Grade R learner from Mamothalo Primary School in Ga-Molepo Village, Capricorn South Education District, has died after being struck by a scholar transport bus on Friday morning, October 24.

The Limpopo Department of Education confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, saying the young girl was fatally injured when the bus allegedly drove over her.

MEC Mourns Loss Off Grade R’s Life

Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya said she was “deeply saddened” by the incident and has called for calm as investigations continue.

“The learner was fatally injured this morning after being hit by a scholar transport bus. A preliminary report indicates that the bus drove over the learner, resulting in fatal injuries,” Lerule-Ramakhanya said.

She added that the department is awaiting a detailed report to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Lerule-Ramakhanya extended heartfelt condolences to the family, school staff, and community members affected by the loss.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, educators, and learners during this painful time. I urge everyone to remain calm as investigations are underway,” she said.

The department has dispatched employee health and wellness officials to the school to provide psychosocial support to the affected learners, teachers, and the bereaved family.

Scholar Transport Safety Under Scrutiny

This incident comes just a month after five learners died in Imbali Township, KwaZulu-Natal, when a taxi transporting schoolchildren crashed into a pre-school after experiencing brake failure.

The string of transport-related school tragedies has reignited calls for tighter regulation and monitoring of scholar transport safety across the country.
