Tragedy In Durban North: One Child Dies, Another Critical After Sandbank Collapse

A tragic accident unfolded in Durban North on Saturday when a sandbank collapsed, trapping two children beneath the debris. In a harrowing moment of desperation, their father used his bare hands to dig through the sand in a desperate attempt to save them.

Marshall Security first responder Andreas Mathios shared the emotional experience in a heartfelt Facebook post, describing the anguish and unity that followed.

“I will never forget the sight of a heartbroken father, driven by desperation and love, digging with his bare hands — frantic, trembling, hopeful,” said Mathios. “Each handful of earth he moved was powered by anguish and an unrelenting belief his children could be saved.”

Emergency responders from multiple services, including firefighters, metro police, paramedics, and volunteers, rushed to the scene in the Glenhills area and immediately began coordinated rescue efforts.

Rescuers Fight Through Mud, Time, and Tragedy

Mathios described how rescue teams worked tirelessly, shoulder to shoulder, in the hopes of bringing both children to safety.

“There was a glimmer of hope, a breath of light in the dark,” he said, referring to the moment the young girl was pulled alive from the sand and rushed to a medical facility in critical condition. But the heartbreak would soon deepen.

“Hours later, after tireless excavations and prayers whispered between breaths, the outcome we feared most came to pass. Her little brother was found,” Mathios recounted.

In a moment of profound reverence, a metro police officer “gently wiped the mud off his own face, knelt beside the boy, and crossed his small arms. Then, with unimaginable tenderness, he called the father to say his final goodbyes.”

KwaZulu-Natal VIP Emergency Medical spokesperson Gareth Naidoo confirmed the death of one child and the critical condition of the other, saying, “Despite the best efforts of rescuers, the child was declared deceased at the scene.”

Durban Community United in Grief and Compassion

As news of the tragedy spread, neighbours, trauma debriefers, and community policing forum members gathered in solidarity with the grieving family.

“No words can describe the sound of a grandfather’s sobs, a soul breaking in real time, or the pain etched into the faces of a family torn apart,” Mathios said. “We became one body, one heart, holding up a family shattered by grief.”

He praised the selfless efforts of all who stepped forward: “To every first responder, to every neighbour who brought water, a comforting hug, held a hand, whispered a prayer — thank you. What you did mattered. What you gave will never be forgotten.”

Naidoo added, “KZN VIP expresses deep gratitude to all emergency personnel and community members who responded to the heartbreaking scene. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families during this incredibly difficult time.”

An investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing.
