Tragedy At NMU: Student Found Dead In Campus Swimming Pool

Shock and grief have gripped the campus of Nelson Mandela University (NMU) after a 21-year-old student was discovered lifeless in a swimming pool on Tuesday morning.

The second-year student, who was studying towards a Diploma in Information Technology, was found in the pool at the Madibaz Fitness & Aquatics Centre on the university’s South Campus.

According to the university, staff and students who accessed the facility early in the morning made the tragic discovery.

Authorities were immediately notified, triggering emergency protocols. Campus Protection Services and paramedics rushed to the scene. Despite their swift response, the young man was declared dead at the pool.

Director of Communication and Marketing at NMU, Primarashni Gower, confirmed the devastating incident.

“Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the family of the deceased, friends, classmates and lecturers during this profoundly difficult time,” she said.

Police Open Inquest as No Foul Play Suspected

The South African Police Service (Saps) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, working alongside the university’s Protection Services.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said:

“He indicated he was going to swim after gym. It is suspected that he drowned and was only discovered this morning when security opened the premises.

“No foul play is being suspected and an inquest case has been opened and being investigated by Saps Humewood,” he said.

At this stage, authorities believe the student may have drowned, though investigations remain ongoing.

University Closes Facility Pending Investigation

As news spread across lecture halls and student residences, campus leadership moved quickly to notify the university community.

In a message circulated to students, Student Village leadership confirmed the incident and announced the temporary closure of the swimming facility.

“We kindly urge all students who make use of the swimming pool to exercise extreme caution.

“Please be mindful of the pool depth and your swimming ability, and where possible, do not swim alone, rather go with someone who is a confident swimmer,” they said.

The Madibaz Fitness & Aquatics Centre will remain closed while investigations and an internal review are conducted.

The university community continues to mourn the loss of a young life cut short.
