Traditional Healers Call For Equal Recognition Of Medical Certificates In South Africa

Traditional healers from across North West gathered at Mmabatho Stadium in Mahikeng to commemorate International African Traditional Medicine Day.

The annual event celebrates the crucial role of traditional medicine in providing affordable and accessible healthcare, particularly in rural communities where modern medical services may be limited.

The celebration was led by the North West Dingaka Association, which continues to champion the recognition of traditional medicine in South Africa.

Push for Recognition of Sick Notes Issued by Traditional Healers

While progress has been made in acknowledging traditional medicine, challenges remain regarding the acceptance of sick notes issued by traditional healers.

Anna Rabotapi, President of the North West Dingaka Association, said the current system unfairly limits recognition to certain healers, leaving others excluded.

“We are trying to make sure our pride as traditional healers is not lost but restored through every celebration. We believe having our medicines available will keep our tradition alive.

“There are challenges around sick notes among some traditional healers, and we’d be happy if all traditional healers in South Africa’s sick notes are recognised, because ours, as the North West Dikgaka Association, are issued and submitted across the different companies our patients work in. Why can’t other traditional healers have the same arrangement for their sick notes?”

The healers emphasised that broader recognition would not only strengthen healthcare accessibility but also safeguard cultural heritage. They believe integrating traditional and modern healthcare systems can benefit communities by offering holistic care.

The call comes as South Africa continues to balance modern medical frameworks with long-standing indigenous practices that remain central to the lives of millions.
