Top Lawyer Chinette Gallichan Gunned Down In Joburg CBD

A 35-year-old attorney, Chinette Gallichan, was shot and killed on Monday morning outside the CCMA offices in the Johannesburg central business district.

The shooting took place at around 9:00am at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets as Gallichan arrived for a scheduled matter.

Gunman Opens Fire at Close Range Before Fleeing

According to witnesses, Gallichan had just stepped out of her vehicle when an attacker approached and opened fire at close range.

The suspect fled on foot before getting into a waiting vehicle and escaping the scene. Early indications suggest the incident may have been a targeted attack, as none of her belongings were taken.

Chinette Gallichan’s Colleagues Mourn Loss of Respected Legal Professional

The killing has sent shock through the legal fraternity. Colleagues described Gallichan as a dedicated professional who was actively involved in labour disputes.

Fellow attorney Jacobus Myburgh said she had been working in the labour litigation department at Sibanye-Stillwater at the time of her death.

She was reportedly handling a matter involving workers who had allegedly been retrenched and were seeking compensation.

Gallichan obtained her LLB from the University of South Africa and later completed a postgraduate diploma in labour law with distinction at the University of Johannesburg.

In a social media post, Myburgh described her as a familiar figure at the CCMA, where she regularly handled cases involving unpaid wages and unfair dismissal.

The South African Police Service has opened a murder case, with investigations currently underway.

Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive, but the nature of the attack has raised concerns about safety in the area and the possibility of a targeted killing.
