Top Insolvency Lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk Assassinated In Joburg, SARIPA Demands Urgent Protection

Prominent insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk was shot and killed at his Saxonwold, Johannesburg, practice on Friday. Police confirmed that four men in a GMW vehicle arrived under the pretense of being clients with a scheduled appointment.

Two suspects entered the boardroom before gunshots were heard. The 43-year-old attorney was declared dead at the scene, while the suspects fled. “The motive of the attack is unknown at this stage, and police investigations are underway,” said Gauteng Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

Van Niekerk had been handling high-profile cases, including a major insolvency matter linked to an alleged Ponzi scheme.

SARIPA and Legal Community Demand Safety Measures

The South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA) expressed shock at the killing, describing Van Niekerk as a respected professional who often dealt with complex, high-profile, and incriminating cases.

His murder follows the assassinations of insolvency practitioners Cloete Murray and his son Thomas Murray just over two years ago.

“It is heartbreaking and utterly unacceptable that in South Africa, courageous, ethical professionals should have to pay with their lives simply for doing their jobs,” said SARIPA chairperson Jo Mitchell-Marais.

SARIPA has vowed to engage with authorities to ensure the safety of insolvency and legal professionals is urgently prioritized.

Lawyers: Calls for Justice and Accountability

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, said Van Niekerk’s killing has revealed the dangers faced by those investigating corruption.

“Bouwer van Niekerk falls among several people in that profession that had been assassinated with regard to matters of State Capture and other serious corruption matters. Unfortunately, we have not seen the kingpins being arrested and successfully prosecuted. Hope in this case we will see change,” Cameron said.

IRS Forensic Investigator Chad Thomas echoed these concerns, warning that assassinations of whistle-blowers and corruption investigators threaten South Africa’s democracy.

“Until we see not just trigger men but these masterminds behind these killings taken to task, assassination unfortunately is an option for these people that have made billions of rand’s by plunging into the public purse,” Thomas stated.
