Tony Forbes Expresses Doubt Over Apprehension Of True Mastermind In AKA’s Murder Case

Tony Forbes, the father of the late musician Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, has raised concerns about the apprehension of all the individuals responsible for his son’s tragic death.

Five out of the seven men charged with the double murder of AKA and his friend, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court for the first time on Thursday.

Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi, Lindani Ndimande, Siyanda Myeza, Mziwethemba Gwabeni, and Lindokuhle Ndimande are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

While two other suspects were arrested in eSwatini, Tony Forbes believes that the true mastermind behind the murders has not yet been apprehended. He expressed his doubts during a media briefing at the court, suggesting that the coordinator, who received money and shared it with six others, may not be the actual mastermind.

Tony Forbes questioned the source of the money and urged the police to follow the financial trail to continue the investigation.

The tragic incident occurred on February 10, 2023, outside the now-defunct Wish on Florida restaurant in Durban. According to the police, AKA was the main target of the alleged hit, while Tibz was shot coincidentally. The suspects played different roles in the operation, and it has been reported that an alleged payment of R800,000 was made and shared among them.

Tony Forbes acknowledged that the extradition process for the remaining two suspects may cause delays in the case. He emphasised that the family was aware of the complexity from the beginning and did not expect a quick resolution.

Police Minister Bheki Cele confirmed that the Department of Justice, rather than the South African Police Service (SAPS), is handling the extradition process. He also mentioned the potential involvement of the Department of Home Affairs in the process, citing previous cases.

Despite claims that the suspects fled to eSwatini due to taxi wars, Minister Cele dismissed the notion, stating that the true reasons would be determined by the court. He urged individuals wanted by the police to surrender themselves rather than crossing borders and complicating the extradition process.
