Thuli Phongolo Slammed Over Real Estate Side Hustle After RDP Houses Spark Backlash

Thuli Phongolo may be winning in entertainment, but her latest business venture has set tongues wagging.
The actress and DJ is under fire after photos of properties marketed by her real estate company, Phongolo Properties, resurfaced online—raising eyebrows and sparking heated debates.
Phongolo, who co-runs the business with her sister Marcia, has been selling homes in Soweto, from a R1.5 million 12-bedroom house in Mapetla to a Braamfischerville RDP listed for R370,000. But what was meant to be a smart investment move quickly turned into controversy.

While some praised Thuli for entering the real estate market and attempting to close the housing gap, many were not impressed by the listings—especially the condition and pricing of the homes.
“These properties look abandoned,” one user commented. Another added: “Wanting cash only for properties that look abandoned and occupied by pharas makes so much sense.”

Critics also questioned the Mapetla mansion’s R1.5 million price tag.
“That house that is going for 1,5m is right opposite hostela, so udakiwe!! There’s also an Engen and usave 2 mins away, but they have been trying to sell that property for years now cause of the crime,” one comment read.
Thuli Phongolo’s Bigger Property Moves
This isn’t the star’s first brush with property headlines. Earlier in 2025, Phongolo purchased a lavish new home for herself and even listed her own mansion for R7.3 million.
Whether her Soweto listings will find buyers remains to be seen—but for now, social media has already rendered its verdict.
