Three Tshwane Officials Arrested Over R7 Million Transformer Theft At Laudium Substation

Three City of Tshwane employees have been arrested for allegedly stealing a transformer worth R7 million from the Laudium substation. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in a months-long investigation into infrastructure-related crimes plaguing the Gauteng province.

The alleged theft, which dates back to November last year, is part of a broader crackdown by the Gauteng organised crime unit on syndicates targeting essential infrastructure. The suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday and are set to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Investigation Deepens as Total Arrests Hit 14

Police say the latest arrests bring the total number of suspects detained in the case to 14. However, only four people remain under serious investigation. An earlier operation led to the arrest of 11 individuals—mostly subcontractors—who were later released due to lack of evidence linking them directly to the theft.

“One municipal employee remains in custody and is expected back in court on August 8,” said police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi. “The suspects face charges of theft of essential infrastructure. More arrests are imminent as the investigation continues.”

Tshwane Police Applaud Breakthrough

The arrest of the three city officials has been welcomed by Tshwane’s top law enforcement officials. Maj-Gen Samuel Thine, Tshwane District Commissioner, commended the organised crime unit for their perseverance in cracking the case.

“This is a major step forward. Their persistence has brought us closer to rooting out those responsible for sabotaging our city’s infrastructure,” said Thine.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity involving public infrastructure.
