Three Suspects Killed In Msinga Shootout With Police

At least three suspects were shot and killed during a gun battle with police in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police acted on intelligence about a cache of unlicensed firearms, leading them to a property in the Mbabane area, where the shootout occurred.

According to police spokesperson Major-General Francis Lambert, officers were fired upon as they approached the homestead.

“When they approached the homestead, they were shot at and returned fire. Three suspects were fatally wounded in that shootout,” Lambert said.

Authorities recovered two AK-47 rifles and a revolver from the scene.

This incident follows a separate shootout in KZN earlier this week, where five suspected robbers were killed in Lindelani, Ntuzuma on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers had been following intelligence on a gang planning a business robbery in KwaMashu.

Meanwhile, the suspects while travelling in two vehicles, were reportedly engaged in an internal dispute, exchanging gunfire among themselves when police arrived.

“The suspects’ two vehicles were parked at the corner of Mdubu and Melusi streets, and it is suspected that the suspects had a disagreement, which led to shots being fired among themselves. Police stumbled upon that altercation, and the suspects then turned their guns on the police, and police retaliated.”

During the gun battle, four suspects were shot and killed at the scene while the fifth suspect attempted to flee but was later found dead from gunshot wounds. Also three firearms were recovered and no police officers were injured in either operation.

These high-profile police operations highlight ongoing efforts to tackle armed criminal groups in KwaZulu-Natal.

Authorities have urged communities to report illegal firearms and criminal activity as part of efforts to combat violent crime in the province.
