Deadly Shootout: Three Suspects Killed In High-Speed Chase With Hawks In Johannesburg

Three suspects were killed in a high-speed chase and shootout with the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management (Toms) Team in Johannesburg.

It is understood that the gun battle occurred on Wednesday evening in Crystal Park following a hijacking attempt.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, officers received intelligence about suspects allegedly involved in hijackings and kidnappings along Elm Road.

“Members tactically patrolled the area and, at approximately 8:30pm, spotted a silver-grey Opel Astra matching the description,” Mogale said.

Police witnessed the suspects pulling a female victim from her Fiat and forcing her into their vehicle.

A high-speed chase followed, during which the suspects allegedly opened fire on officers.

Suspects Killed In Shootout

The chase ended when the men’s vehicle crashed into a barrier and embankment.

“In the aftermath, three suspects were fatally wounded, and the victim was rescued without injuries,” Mogale confirmed.

Authorities recovered:

• Two firearms
• The victim’s stolen belongings

Investigations are ongoing.

Brooklyn Mall Robbery Sparks Second Shootout

In a separate incident, five men aged between 32 and 38 were arrested following a robbery at a jewellery store in Brooklyn Mall.

Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the robbery took place on Wednesday morning, 18 March.

“One suspect posed as a customer before forcibly gaining entry. While one damaged display cases, others grabbed jewellery before fleeing,” Sibeko said.

The suspects then hijacked a vehicle to escape.

A coordinated response involving police, law enforcement agencies, and private security tracked the suspects to the Pretoria Central CBD.

“A shootout ensued during the pursuit, and a security officer sustained gunshot injuries. He is currently receiving medical treatment,” Sibeko added.

Thre men were also injured and taken to hospital under police guard.

Recovered items include:

• The hijacked vehicle
• A firearm with ammunition
• Stolen jewellery

Authorities have confirmed that investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
