Three Men Killed In Cape Town Drive-By Shooting

Three men died following a drive-by shooting in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town, on Wednesday evening in what is believed to be a gang-related incident.

The shooting happened at the corner of Kiaat Avenue and Jakkalsvlei Street at about 7.30pm.

Two victims, aged 29 and 38, were declared dead at the scene after suffering gunshot wounds to their upper and lower bodies.

A third victim, aged 22, was taken to a medical facility with gunshot injuries but later died on Thursday.

The incident comes amid concerns over possible retaliation following the killing of an alleged Americans gang member earlier this week.

Cape Town Police Recover Hijacked Vehicle And Firearm

Angus McKenzie said at least one of the victims was believed to be innocent.

“This senseless act of violence comes in the wake of the warnings we issued regarding possible retaliation following [Tuesday] night’s killing,” McKenzie said.

“Let us be clear, the life lost today was not a gang member, but an innocent individual who did not deserve to become a victim of this ongoing cycle of violence.”

Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said two murder cases and one attempted murder case had been opened at Bishop Lavis SAPS.

Mpendukana said officers spotted a shootout while driving past the area and immediately pursued a silver Toyota Etios believed to have been used in the attack.

“After a lengthy chase they found the car abandoned in another street and the suspects had fled on foot. Upon searching the car, they found out that the car was carjacked in Athlone and inside it they found a 9mm pistol that was also stolen in Athlone,” Mpendukana said.

Police believe the suspects changed the vehicle’s number plates to avoid detection.

No Arrests Yet As Investigation Continues

McKenzie said additional charges linked to the hijacked vehicle could be added once suspects are arrested.

“This once again highlights the level of planning behind these crimes but it also highlights something more powerful that no matter the lengths criminals go to, coordinated action and community intelligence will always outmatch them,” he said.

No arrests have been made.
