Three Killed, 14 Injured In Devastating Head-On Collision On R61 In Eastern Cape

Three people have tragically lost their lives following a head-on collision between two vehicles near Forty Junctions on the R61 road in Ngcobo, Eastern Cape, on Friday.

According to authorities, fourteen other passengers sustained various injuries and were rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment after the crash.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed that a Toyota minibus taxi carrying 14 occupants collided with a VW Polo carrying five occupants. Both vehicles were reportedly travelling in opposite directions at the time of the collision.

Reckless Driving Suspected in Fatal Crash

Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said all injured passengers were taken to Cofimvaba Provincial Hospital for further medical evaluation.

“It is alleged that recklessness and negligence were the causes of the accident,” Binqose added.

The tragic incident adds to the growing number of road fatalities reported across the Eastern Cape this year, with authorities repeatedly urging motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations.

Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.
