Three Jailed For 2020 Bellville Taxi Violence Murder

Three men have been handed heavy prison sentences, including one life term, for their involvement in the 2020 murder of a taxi association member in Bellville.

The killing, linked to taxi route disputes between Bellville and Paarl, marks another chapter in South Africa’s ongoing taxi violence crisis.

Brutal Daylight Murder Caught In Taxi Feud

Siyabonga Dywili, Siphenathi Nglela, and Lihle Plam were sentenced in the Bellville Regional Court on Tuesday for the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old man on June 8, 2020.

The victim was sitting in his Toyota Hilux on Charl Malan Street when two armed suspects approached and opened fire in broad daylight.

The suspects then fled the scene in a Toyota Avanza.

The murder was immediately linked to tensions between rival taxi groups competing for lucrative routes between Bellville and Paarl.

Police Chase And Shootout Lead To Arrests

Responding officers quickly identified and pursued the getaway vehicle along Voortrekker Road.

During the high-speed chase, the suspects fired at the police, prompting a shootout.

Despite the gunfire exchange, police successfully apprehended all three suspects.

The trio faced multiple charges, including murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Sentencing

The investigation, led by Lieutenant Colonel Julian Tarentaal, was instrumental in securing the convictions.

During the trial, Tarentaal was commended for his calm, composed testimony and thorough investigative work.

“Siyabonga Dywili received a life sentence, while co-accused Siphenathi Nglela and Lihle Plam were each sentenced to 18 years in prison,” said Swartbooi.

Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Albert Maqhashalala, commended  Tarentaal’s commitment: “He did everything within his power to ensure justice was served.”
