Three Hospitalised After Fire Engulfs Student Accommodation In Tshwane

Three people were hospitalised for inhaling smoke after a fire broke out at Volley Luxury Student Accommodation in Brooklyn, Tshwane.

The blaze ignited at the corner of Marais Street and Hay Street on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a swift emergency response. City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni confirmed that the fire was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) just after midday.

In response, multiple fire stations dispatched resources to the scene, including, Hatfield Fire Station, Central Fire Station, Hazelwood Fire Station, and Silverton Fire Station.

While, deployment included two fire engines, a water tanker, an industrial pumper, a ladder truck, a district commander’s unit, and a video unit.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that one of the apartments on the top floor of the three-storey building was engulfed in flames.

“The apartment was well alight, and firefighters immediately established incident command and began firefighting operations,” said Mnguni.

Moreso, the fire rapidly spread through the ceiling, threatening four additional apartments. However, the quick actions of the emergency teams helped contain the fire within the affected unit, preventing further damage to nearby buildings.

Various emergency response units, including the Gauteng Province Emergency Medical Services, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, and private ambulance services, assisted on-site.

Fire was fully extinguished by 13:47, followed by damping down operations. Three individuals suffered smoke inhalation and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Earlier this month, another fire broke out at a building on the corner of Main Road and Treurnicht Street in Rayton Park Plaza.

Emergency responders arrived just before 10 PM and confirmed that no one was inside the building at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

As with the Brooklyn fire, the cause of the Rayton blaze has not yet been determined.
