Three Arrested In Limpopo For Illegal Mining, R16 Million equipment Seized

Three suspected illegal miners have been arrested in Thabazimbi, Limpopo following a joint operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

The suspects arrested in Limpopo, aged between 28 and 48, were apprehended on Tuesday during a targeted clampdown on illicit mining operations in the Zwartkop area.

The operation involved multiple law enforcement units, including the SAPS Waterberg Illegal Mining Task Team, the Tactical Response Team, and the local Criminal Record Centre.

Mining Equipment Worth R16 Million Confiscated

During the raid at the illegal mining site in Limpopo, police discovered eight large excavators actively mining at the Zwartkop site.

These heavy-duty machines, estimated to be worth over R16 million, were seized on the spot.

“Upon arrival at Zwartkop, the police spotted eight excavators engaged in mining. Three suspects were arrested at the scene,” confirmed Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, Hawks spokesperson in Limpopo.

Authorities also revealed that one of the individuals may be in the country illegally, and additional charges under the Immigration Act are expected to follow.

Suspects To Appear In Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court

The arrested individuals are set to make their first appearance before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

They will face charges related to illegal mining and potential violations of South Africa’s immigration laws.

Warrant Officer Mmuroa, while reaffirming the agency’s commitment to cracking down on this growing problem stated, “The Hawks’ operations aimed at dismantling illegal mining activities across Limpopo are ongoing.”
