Three Arrested After Axe Attack On Police Officer Outside Delft Police Station

Three suspects are expected to appear in court after a police officer was allegedly attacked with an axe outside the Delft Police Station in Cape Town.

The incident unfolded during the early hours of Monday and left a police constable with serious injuries.

Police have strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a serious assault on a law enforcement officer carrying out his duties.

Delft Police Officer Injured In Alleged Axe Attack

The Delft police officer attack occurred at around 2:05am outside the Community Service Centre at the station.

According to police, a constable was standing outside the facility when he was approached by a suspect armed with an axe.

The suspect allegedly struck the officer on the head, causing serious injuries.

A fellow officer who witnessed the incident reacted immediately and fired warning shots in an attempt to stop the attack.

The suspects then fled the scene.

Three Suspects Arrested After Joint SAPS And LEAP Operation

A coordinated response involving SAPS members and Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers was launched shortly after the attack.

Police said the suspects abandoned their vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.

The pursuit led to the arrest of three suspects, identified as two men aged 23 and 25 and a 23-year-old woman.

Authorities also recovered the axe believed to have been used during the attack.

Police spokesperson Andrè Traut confirmed that all three suspects remain in custody.

“The suspects have been detained and are expected to appear in court on charges related to the incident. The circumstances surrounding the attack are under investigation,” Traut said.

Police Condemn Attack As Investigations Continue

The injured SAPS member was rushed to a medical facility for treatment following the incident.

According to Traut, the constable is receiving medical care and is reported to be in a stable condition.

The attack comes amid ongoing concerns about violent crimes targeting police officers across South Africa.

Earlier this month, a Public Order Policing (POP) officer and a civilian were shot and killed in Gauteng.

The off-duty officer was reportedly at a local supermarket when he was attacked by three unknown suspects and fatally shot. The suspects allegedly moved to a nearby street and shot another victim inside a vehicle.

Police investigations into the Delft attack are continuing as authorities work to establish the motive behind the assault.
