Third Taxi-Related Killing Reported This Week As Driver Shot Dead In Seawinds

A third taxi-related killing has been recorded this week after a taxi driver was fatally shot in Seawinds on Wednesday evening.

The 34-year-old driver was gunned down at around 2.40pm at the corner of St William Road and St Patrick Avenue. The attackers fled the scene and no arrests have been made.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder case has been opened and that the motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Seawinds taxi shooting under police investigation

Twigg said, “The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, at about 2.40pm, on the corner of St Patrick Avenue and St William Road, Seawinds, where a 34-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation.

Muizenberg police responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victim inside a minibus taxi with gunshot wounds to his body.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. A murder case was registered for investigation.”

Police are urging anyone with information related to the shooting to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tips anonymously via the MySAPS mobile application.

Taxi associations deny links to slain driver

When contacted, chairpersons from both the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) said the victim was not affiliated with their organisations and that they were not aware of the incident.

The Seawinds killing occurred just hours after another taxi driver was shot dead in the Southern Suburbs.

Two more violent deaths linked to taxi sector this week

Tributes have been pouring in on social media for Yaseen Kippie, 55, a well-known taxi driver from Bonteheuwel who was shot and killed while operating in Lavender Hill on Tuesday. He was reportedly dropping off workers when he was attacked and later died at a medical facility.

In a separate incident, a man believed to be a taxi guard was stabbed to death on Tuesday morning at the Delft Mall parking area. The attack took place at around 11.45am, when the victim was stabbed in the chest and died at the scene. Delft police have also registered a murder case for investigation.
