Thembinkosi Mthembu Recounts How His Sister’s Boyfriend Became Her Killer “Love Shouldn’t Kill”

As South Africa turns purple in solidarity with victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), actor Thembinkosi Mthembu has opened up about the tragedy that changed his life forever — the brutal loss of his sister at the hands of her partner.

Speaking candidly during an interview on Afternoons with Relebogile Mabotja on 702, the Shaka iLembe and Adulting star shared how deeply the issue of GBV resonates with him, revealing that his sister was murdered by the man who claimed to love her.

Thembinkosi Mthembu ‘I Knew His Love Was Dangerous’

Mthembu recalled meeting his late sister’s boyfriend and immediately sensing something dark about him.

“I could see from the beginning that the way he loved her was dangerous,” he said. “As their relationship went on, he started showing his true colours. She eventually left him — but little did she know that would be the beginning of the end.”

According to Mthembu, the man allegedly murdered his sister not long after she ended the relationship. The actor described the pain of losing someone so close to him, not to illness or accident, but to violence at the hands of a partner.

‘They Should Have Reached Out Before the Podcast’

During the same interview, Mthembu revealed that the perpetrator’s stepmother had tried to reach out to him after he first spoke publicly about the incident on a podcast.

“His stepmother tried to reach out after that interview. I think she saw I was still struggling and wanted to talk,” he said. “But I couldn’t. I told her it’s okay — if they wanted to check up, they would have done that before the podcast.”

The actor admitted that healing has been a difficult process. “You never really get used to knowing that your sister died at the hands of someone who said he loved her,” he said quietly.

Tributes Pour In for His Late Sister

After social media shared Mthembu’s interview, several people who knew his sister personally took to the comments to remember her.
