Thando Thabethe’s Low Budget Durban July Look Gets A Brutal 2/10

Thando Thabethe showed up to Durban July in an all-black corseted gown with thigh-high boots and a wide-brim hat, and listen, the styling had potential. It just didn’t land. This one’s getting a 2/10 from us, and we don’t say that lightly.

The silhouette wasn’t the problem. It was everything around it: the fit felt safe, the accessories didn’t commit to a story, and next to some of the wilder interpretations of this year’s theme, it read more “photoshoot backdrop” than “Durban July moment.” Hay bales and a black gown is a look, but it needed one more idea to really pull it off.

Why Thando Thabethe’s Durban July Outfit Missed The Mark

Here’s our issue with the Thando Thabethe Durban July outfit specifically: it plays it too safe for an event that rewards swinging big. The corset detailing and boots had edge, but the overall styling felt unfinished, like the concept stopped halfway through. Compare it to the fully committed, theme-obsessed looks other stars brought this year and the gap is obvious.

It’s also worth saying: this year’s Durban July fashion overall has had a noticeably tighter energy. Fewer of the over-the-top, clearly-expensive showstoppers we’re used to, more pared-back looks across the board. Make of that what you will, Mzansi, but the vibe shift is real.

The Marawa Factor, Because We Have To Mention It

We’d be doing this wrong if we didn’t bring up that Thando’s been Instagram official with Robert Marawa since May, so cameras were extra locked in on her look today.

That relationship context is exactly why this outfit got scrutinised harder than it might have otherwise. High visibility, lower-impact fit — that combination was always going to invite commentary.

Well, sis has range and we know she can bring it. This one just wasn’t it, and we’re allowed to say so.
