Terry Motau Resigns Over Budget Concerns At Madlanga Commission Of Inquiry

Former chief evidence leader Advocate Terry Motau has stepped down from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, raising concerns over the financial limitations imposed on the commission.

Motau tendered his resignation on Tuesday, citing the commission’s budget among several administrative challenges that hindered its ability to operate effectively.

He has since been replaced by Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC, who is expected to take over leadership of the inquiry.

Administrative Hurdles Behind the Decision

Speaking to eNCA’s Heidi Giokos, Motau explained that the commission’s financial and operational constraints made it difficult to fulfil its objectives.

While he expressed disappointment in stepping down, he stressed that the inquiry’s mandate should not be undermined by his departure.

“The budget allocated to the commission is among the issues that led to my decision,” Motau revealed. However, he cautioned against drawing negative conclusions about the credibility of the process, noting that the inquiry remains an important step toward uncovering the truth.

Despite his resignation, Motau called on the public to continue supporting the work of the Madlanga Commission. He emphasised that the collective goal should remain on verifying the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Terry reiterated that the inquiry plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability within the South African Police Service, adding that the focus must remain on facts rather than speculation.
