Teenager Murdered In Philippi For Spaza Shop Filming Extortion Incident

Residents in Philippi are in shock following the brutal murder of a 17-year-old who was shot multiple times with a rifle.

The incident occurred when the victim was filming an extortion incident taking place in Siyahlala informal settlement in Browns Farm. The suspects noticed him recording and began chasing him. Seeking refuge in a nearby house, the teenager was tragically shot.

According to a leaked report, the victim was capturing footage of suspects engaged in extorting a spaza shop. When the suspects saw him filming, they pursued him.

The teenager sought shelter in his own home, but the suspects demanded his cell phone, which held the incriminating evidence. One suspect armed with a rifle, fired shots at the door, eventually gaining entry and injuring the boy.

The suspects mistakenly took a different cellphone and fled the scene, leaving the victim’s phone behind. The teenager was rushed to Mitchells Plain hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The police have opened a murder investigation, but no arrests have been made yet.

This senseless killing has left the community traumatised, with calls for the police to apprehend the shooters and reinstate the extortion unit. The incident highlights the urgent need to address the escalating issue of extortion in Philippi.

In response, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has launched an anti-extortion campaign in Khayelitsha, titled “Enough is Enough! Genoeg is Genoeg! Kwanele!”

The campaign aims to encourage residents to report incidents of extortion through a 24-hour hotline and rewards system. The police also have specialized task teams to combat economic crimes and extortion.
