Teen Missing Off Mozambique Coast Earns Five Matric Distinctions, School Pays Tribute

It was a moment of pride tinged with deep sadness when Noordheuwel High School confirmed on Wednesday morning that teen missing off Mozambique coast, Rikus Kylander had achieved five distinctions in his matric examinations.

The 18-year-old from Krugersdorp, Gauteng, demonstrated exceptional academic dedication, but he is unable to share in the celebration of his results after disappearing while snorkelling off the coast of Mozambique in December.

Rikus went missing during a post-matric holiday with friends, a trip intended to mark the end of their school careers. Despite extensive search efforts lasting more than three weeks, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Search Efforts End After Weeks Along Mozambique Coast

Rikus was snorkelling with around 12 friends near Ponta do Ouro Beach, Mozambique, about a week before Christmas when he failed to return to shore. The group had travelled to the coastal destination on December 16 to celebrate completing matric.

Renegades Search & Rescue spokesperson Dawn Gounden said lifeguards and local authorities were alerted immediately once his friends realised he was missing. Search operations began on the same day, with teams scouring the area by sea, land and air.

His family travelled to Mozambique and arrived the following morning to assist in the search. After 22 days of intensive efforts involving rescue teams, volunteers and relatives, the official search was called off on Friday last week.

On Wednesday, Noordheuwel High released Rikus’s matric results, confirming that he had earned five distinctions. In a statement, the school said:

“Our dear Rikus achieved five distinctions.

Alongside a photograph of Rikus in his school uniform, the school added: “You were a son, you were a brother, you were a family member, you were a friend, you were a Norie [the name for pupils at Noordheuwel], you were Rikus Kylander.”

The school also indicated that it intends to celebrate Rikus’s life, with further details to be shared in due course.

Family Thanks Supporters as Search for the teen Is Called Off

Rikus’s older sister, Clarise, previously told IOL that the family had been praying for his safe return and were exhausting every possible avenue to find him.

On Friday, she confirmed in a family statement that the search had come to an end.

“Everything that could be done has been done,” she said.

“We are deeply grateful to every single person who has walked alongside us during this unimaginable time — your prayers, efforts, messages, and acts of kindness have meant more than words can ever express.”
