Teen In Court For Alleged Rape, Robbery And Murder Of 79-Year-Old Woman

A 17-year-old boy has appeared in the Wynberg Regional Circuit Court, sitting as the Western Cape High Court, in connection with the rape, robbery and murder of 79-year-old equestrian Valarie Enziar.

The accused, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was 16 at the time of the incident. He is from Van Wyksdorp, a town near the victim’s farm outside Ladismith.

He faces multiple charges, including rape, murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, as well as a charge under the Older Persons Act.

Details of Alleged Rape and Murder Emerge

According to the indictment, the incident took place on or about 14 July 2025 at Enziar’s farm, Doringkloof, where she had lived for nearly 20 years.

The State alleges that she was assaulted, raped and strangled during the attack. Her body was later discovered on the stoep of her home by a farm worker.

Prosecutors further allege that several items were taken from the property, including a horse, a cellphone, a laptop and other belongings.

Investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly used the victim’s bank cards at nearby shops shortly after the incident, which led to his arrest.

Court Proceedings Underway

During his court appearance, the teenager appeared confused and was accompanied by his mother, who indicated that she does not understand English well.

Details on how the accused allegedly gained access to the property remain unclear, as the trial is still in its early stages.

The case has also renewed concerns about safety in rural communities, with reports that Enziar had previously raised concerns about criminal activity in the area.
