Only one season remains before the end of Star Trek: Discovery. The Paramount+ series will end after season 5, which “will find Captain Burnham (Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S.
“Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.” according to the official synopsis.
According to Variety, the fifth season will be available on Paramount+ in 2024, rather than this year as initially planned. Star Trek: Discovery was the franchise’s first to include a Black female lead and prominent LGBTQIA+ characters.
Unlike previous entries in the franchise, it also mainly adopted a more serialised approach, with each episode as its own instalment in a season’s primary storyline. Nonetheless, this became a contention for the series until the showrunners reversed direction and embraced storytelling with an overarching plot in season four.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series presently holds the record for being the longest-running drama on Paramount+.
Its release in 2017 resulted in record sign-up numbers for the then-named CBS All Access streaming service, and its popularity opened the path for subsequent Trek series such as Below Decks and Prodigy.
Tanya Giles, chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming, said in a statement: “Star Trek: Discovery is a perennial favourite on the service, near and dear to the hearts of legions of ‘Star Trek’ fans as well as all of us here at Paramount+.
“The series and its incredible cast and creatives ushered in a new era for Star Trek when it debuted over six years ago, embracing the future of streaming with serialized storytelling, bringing to life deep and complex characters that honour Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of representing diversity and inclusion, and pushing the envelope with award-winning world-building.
“This final season will see our beloved crew take on a new adventure and we can’t wait to celebrate the series’ impact on the franchise leading up to its final season early next year.”
Trek fans may currently watch Star Trek: Picard, which is available on Paramount+. Its third season will also be it’s final, but there are reports that the service is working on spinoffs based on the show’s characters.
