OpenAI has recently unveiled a groundbreaking feature for ChatGPT users, allowing them to avoid repetitively providing instruction prompts to the chatbot in every interaction.

With the introduction of custom instructions, users can now effortlessly share specific contextual details, enabling ChatGPT to deliver more tailored responses.

Whether it’s specifying a particular subject, preferred coding language, family size, or even recommending restaurants and flights based on location, this new feature adds a layer of personalization and efficiency to the user experience.

The company acknowledged that while users could previously convey these preferences while engaging with the bot, the addition of custom instructions makes it exceptionally convenient for users who frequently require the same context.

Additionally, this feature seamlessly integrates with plug-ins, streamlining tasks such as suggesting local restaurants or flight options based on individual preferences.

However, it’s essential to note that the custom instructions feature is currently available exclusively for Plus plan users and is still in beta testing. Regrettably, individuals located in the EU and the U.K. will not have access to this feature.

To utilize custom instructions, users can effortlessly opt-in on the web by navigating to their profile settings and selecting “Beta features,” followed by “Opt into Custom Instructions.”

On iOS devices, users can access this option through “Settings,” then “New Features,” and finally, enable “Custom Instructions.”

OpenAI emphasized that the information provided for custom responses would be utilized to train its API models in adapting to varying instructions effectively.

By understanding user preferences better, the model can generate responses that align with the specified context without overstepping boundaries.

However, users concerned about data privacy have the option to opt out of this setting via their data control settings.

The company has been piloting this feature with select users, as noted by consultant Gavriel Cohen on Twitter. The interface provides two text boxes, allowing users to describe themselves and specify how they wish to customize the chatbot’s responses.

Once the user’s preferences are inputted, the changes will be implemented starting from the next chat session. Notably, the response limit is set at 1,500 characters to ensure concise and focused instructions.

To maintain safety and uphold community guidelines, OpenAI employs its moderation API to scan customized instructions, flagging any potentially harmful or offensive content.

Any instructions that violate the company’s policy will be rejected, ensuring that ChatGPT remains a respectful and useful tool for all users.
