Google had allowed users with iPhone to use their phones as a security key, which wasn’t so clear why so until now. The tech giant is simplifying sign-ups for its Advanced Protection Program.
Currently, users with reasonably modern Android phone, which runs ‘7.0 Nougat or later’ or iPhone ‘iOS 10 or later’ can simply enroll in Advanced Protection with just their handset as the security key.

More so, users can also get airtight security for their Google account without carrying around a key fob meant for signing in. Then for iOS users, they’ll need to download Google’s Smart Lock app, and that’s the only major hassle to go through, which can be tolerated.
As usual, the sign-in requires a Bluetooth connection between the ‘key’ and sign-in device in order to thwart remote account hijacks. Users can register backup keys as safeguards in case they lose their phones.
Advanced Protection was originally meant for politicians, celebrities, journalists and other people whose accounts maybe be the target to hackers. Google is still rolling out this service with those users in mind, most especially with the forthcoming 2020 US presidential election on the pipeline.

Although, Google said that the service is available to anyone who wants it to protect accounts. If you’re concerned enough about your account that ordinary two-factor authentication isn’t enough, you can go all ahead and sign up.
