Tebogo Thobejane Flees South Africa In Fear As State Opposes Bail In Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala Case

The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court heard that actress Tebogo Thobejane has fled South Africa, fearing for her safety amid the ongoing case against alleged businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Thobejane was wounded in a 2023 shooting on the N1 near Sandton, an attack that forms the basis of the attempted murder charges against Matlala.

State prosecutor Elise Le Roux told the court, “It is a fact that Miss Thobejane fled the country out of fear for her life. She communicated with the investigating team that she still fears for her life that’s why she will not return. So her life has also changed forever.”

State Opposes Bail for Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala

The state strongly opposed bail for the 49-year-old businessman, who also faces charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit murder. Prosecutors argue that Matlala cannot be trusted, citing discrepancies in his financial disclosures and his attempts to conceal assets.

The court heard that Matlala had failed to declare a trust registered in Mauritius, contradicting his claims that he had no business interests or family ties in any country abroad.

Adding to the state’s case, prosecutors revealed that Matlala allegedly possesses a fraudulent Eswatini identity document registered under a different surname. The document was reportedly shared via a phone message from Matlala’s wife, who is also a co-accused in the attempted murder case.

The state argued that this discovery further proves Matlala has not been “playing open cards,” raising serious concerns about his credibility and reinforcing their opposition to bail.
