Taxi Violence In Katlehong: Gunmen Kill Two, Torch Vehicle In Brutal Rank Shooting

A deadly shooting erupted early Thursday morning at the Zonkizizwe taxi rank in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, leaving two people dead—a member of a minibus taxi association and a security officer.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, about 10 men arrived at the rank in a white Toyota Fortuner and opened fire on security personnel. In the aftermath, a bakkie belonging to the security team was set alight, while another vehicle was riddled with bullet holes.

“The motive behind the shooting is suspected to be taxi violence-related and one rifle has been seized for further investigations. No-one is arrested yet,” Nevhuhulwi confirmed.

Police Seize Weapons in Separate Dawn Park Raid

Later on the same day, police intensified efforts to crack down on criminal networks. A combined team from the highway unit, Hillbrow tracing unit, and Johannesburg Metro Police tactical response team raided a warehouse in Dawn Park.

Three suspects were arrested at the scene and found in possession of an R5 rifle, multiple rounds of ammunition, and three magazines.

“These will be taken for ballistic testing to determine if the firearm was used in the commission of crime,” said Nevhuhulwi, indicating a possible connection to Thursday’s deadly taxi rank shooting.

As the investigation into the Zonkizizwe shooting continues, police are appealing to the public for assistance.
