Enkomeni Taxi Rank Massacre: Four Killed, Three Injured in Johannesburg Shooting

Four people were gunned down, and three others were injured in a brutal shooting at Enkomeni taxi rank in Doornfontein, Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

Police have confirmed that the Gauteng Taxi Violence Unit will investigate the attack, which saw unknown gunmen open fire on bystanders.

Gunmen Open Fire at Taxi Rank

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a group of armed suspects arrived in a white BMW before randomly firing shots at people in the rank.

“The deceased were identified as taxi drivers, and two passengers were injured and taken to hospital,” Nevhuhulwi confirmed. Among the wounded is a university student who was waiting for a bus at the time of the attack.

The suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made. However, police have identified the getaway vehicle and are pursuing leads.

Taxi Violence Link Suspected

Authorities believe the attack is linked to ongoing taxi violence in the province. This is the second deadly taxi-related shooting in Gauteng this week. On Wednesday, three people were killed at a taxi rank south of Vosloorus.

On the same day, police made a breakthrough in the Eastern Cape, arresting a notorious taxi boss in East London.

“This follows a lengthy police investigation led by a specialised team of investigators and operational units,” said police spokesperson Major-General Nonkululeko Phokane.

“The suspect is a high-profile figure in the Eastern Cape taxi industry and has been linked to multiple taxi-related murders and extortion cases,” he added.

National Task Team Investigating Taxi Violence

The National Taxi Violence and Extortion Task Team was previously established to tackle crime and corruption within the deadly industry.

With the latest wave of killings, taxi violence continues to terrorise commuters and drivers, raising urgent concerns about safety at taxi ranks nationwide.
