Taxi Operators Nabbed After Pointing Gun At Police Officer In Shocking Limpopo Standoff

Three taxi operators are set to appear in court after a brazen act of intimidation saw them threaten police officers during an anti-smuggling operation in Musina, Limpopo.

The suspects allegedly mistook the officers for civilians and unlawfully attempted to assert authority they do not possess.

Taxi Operators Threaten Police During N1 Operation

The incident unfolded on Thursday while SAPS members were conducting an anti-smuggling operation in an unmarked vehicle on the N1 near the Sasol petrol station outside Musina.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, a white Toyota Corolla fitted with white strobe lights and local taxi patrol stickers pulled the officers over.

“Believing the vehicle to be transporting hitchhikers between Musina and Makhado without their ‘permission’, the three occupants of the Corolla unlawfully confronted the SAPS members, pointed them with a firearm, threatened them with a sjambok, and attempted to exercise policing powers they do not possess,” Mashaba said.

He added that the police officers immediately identified themselves and responded tactically.

Armed Intimidation and Failed Escape Attempt

After realising they were dealing with police officers, the taxi operators attempted to flee the scene but were swiftly apprehended.

Mashaba said the suspects later admitted that they had mistaken the unmarked police vehicle for a civilian car.

He warned that the incident highlighted the serious danger posed when individuals take the law into their own hands.

The suspects, aged between 32 and 49, were arrested on charges including pointing a firearm, unlawful use of white strobe lights, crimen injuria, reckless and negligent driving, and intimidation.

Firearm, Extortion Evidence and Vehicle Seized

During the arrest, police seized a 9mm pistol with two magazines and 33 live rounds of ammunition, a sjambok, a white strobe light and a notebook.

“During the arrest, police also seized a notebook containing vehicle registration numbers and recorded amounts of money allegedly extorted from motorists, indicating possible organised extortion activities,” Mashaba said.

Police also impounded the vehicle used by the suspects.

The trio is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 January.

Acting Limpopo police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers condemned the incident, saying SAPS would act firmly against anyone who undermines lawful policing.

“Mistakenly confronting police officers with firearms underscores how dangerous and unlawful these actions are,” Scheepers said.

“No individual or group has the authority to stop vehicles, intimidate motorists, or enforce the law,” he added.

Scheepers also praised the Provincial Tracking Team for their professionalism and restraint under extremely dangerous circumstances.
