Taxi Operator Gunned Down On R300 Near Somerset West Amid Renewed Taxi Violence

A 32-year-old taxi operator was shot and killed on the R300 highway near Somerset West in the Western Cape, police confirmed. Two others sustained injuries during the attack.

According to early reports, the incident is suspected to be linked to the long-standing conflict between the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (CODETA).

Both groups have been at the centre of violent disputes over routes and territory in recent years.

CODETA Denies Involvement in Deadly Shooting

In response to the fatal attack, CODETA publicly distanced itself from any involvement in the violence. The association stated it had no connection to “any actions or individuals” responsible for the deadly incident.

Taxi routes across the Western Cape had only recently reopened after a month-long shutdown prompted by a surge in violent clashes between rival associations.

The reopening brought temporary relief to commuters and drivers who had been affected by widespread disruptions to public transport services.

Authorities have yet to confirm any arrests related to the shooting, while investigations into the motive and those behind the attack continue.
