Taxi Guard Shot Dead In Early Morning Shooting In Delft

A 31-year-old taxi guard affiliated with the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) was shot and killed in Delft on Tuesday morning, police confirmed.

The shooting occurred at around 6am at the corner of Orange and Hindle Road in the Leiden area. Officers responding to the scene found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

A second man sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and right arm and was transported to a medical facility for treatment.

Police Probe Taxi Guard Murder and Attempted Murder Cases

The South African Police Service has opened cases of murder and attempted murder following the incident.

Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala said: “This office confirms that Delft police registered a case of murder and attempted murder, following a shooting incident at the corner of Orange and Hindle Road, Leiden, this morning (24 March 2026).

“Members attended the scene at around 6am and found the body of a 31-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds.

“He was certified dead on the scene, while a second adult male victim, who sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and right arm, was transported to a medical facility.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and the case has been transferred to Provincial Serious Violent Crime detectives for further investigation.”

Second Deadly Incident in Weeks Raises Concern

The latest shooting comes two weeks after a triple murder at the Voorbrug Taxi Rank on Delft Main Road, involving members of Codeta and the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata).

Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge confirmed the victims were members of the organisation and said the incident has heightened concern within the industry.

“We can confirm that the victims belong to Codeta. We cannot confirm what the circumstances surrounding this incident are at the moment, but we are so shocked about what is happening, because this is not the first time.

“We have a memorial service today (24 March 2026) for one of our members who was shot in Delft just two weeks ago at the taxi rank. We are on our way to the memorial service.

“This seems like a continuation. We can confirm that the shooting is taxi-related, but we do not have the proper details,” Enge said.

Enge warned that the pattern of violence could lead to further incidents.

“We should think that this is going to escalate because of the times in between and the continuity of it (shootings), we should think so,” he said.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities monitor the situation.
