Taxi Driver Arrested For Smuggling 20 Children At Beitbridge Border

The Border Management Authority (BMA) intercepted a South African minibus taxi driver allegedly attempting to smuggle 25 undocumented foreign nationals, including 20 children, into the country through the Beitbridge port of entry.

Undocumented Children in Inhumane Conditions

The incident occurred on Monday when the driver was caught transporting 20 children aged between five and 14 under dangerous and inhuman conditions. BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi confirmed the vehicle was impounded, and the driver was charged, receiving a conveyance fine of R375,000 in line with the Immigration Act.

The children were handed over to Zimbabwean child welfare authorities for their safety while investigations continue.

Crackdown on Criminal Networks

BMA acting commissioner Jane Thupana emphasised the agency’s dedication to combating trafficking and smuggling operations that target vulnerable individuals, particularly children.

“The trafficking and smuggling of people undermine human dignity and border security. The BMA remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard South Africa’s ports of entry and protect those at risk,” said Thupana.

The BMA pledged to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to intensify the fight against illegal activities at border points.
