Taxi Crash In Pietermaritzburg Claims Lives Of 5 Children: KZN Edu Dept

KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Education has confirmed the deaths of five children following a tragic taxi accident in Pietermaritzburg.

The incident occurred on Thursday when a minibus taxi carrying pupils lost control and crashed into a classroom at a pre-school in the Imbali area.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene to assist the victims.

Learners from Multiple Schools Affected

According to the KZN Department of Education, four learners died at the scene, while a fifth child passed away en route to hospital. Several other learners sustained injuries during the crash.

Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi provided details: “We received the news that a taxi ferrying learners from various schools, amongst them Sukuma, hit a tree before ploughing into a day care centre which is a crèche. On the scene, four learners perished while the fifth succumbed while on route to hospital.”

Officials confirmed that the victims were pupils from different schools in the area.

Law enforcement authorities, including police and road traffic inspectorate officers, were deployed immediately following the crash. The incident comes just a day after another learner was fatally hit by a truck in the King Cetshwayo District in northern KZN.

The Department of Education and emergency services are continuing to investigate and provide support to the affected families.
