Gauteng Taxi Boss And Bodyguard Gunned Down In BMW X5 Ambush

A prominent Gauteng taxi boss, Molefe Moekeletsi, chairperson of the Alexandra Randburg Midrand Sandton Taxi Association (ARMSTA), has been shot and killed alongside his bodyguard in what police believe is a taxi violence-related hit.

The deadly ambush unfolded on Viola Crescent in Marlboro Gardens at around 9am on Thursday, leaving two people dead and three others injured.

Gunmen open fire on Taxi Boss from BMW X5

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, Moekeletsi was travelling in a convoy of two vehicles — a Mahindra bakkie and an Audi sedan — when they came under attack from gunmen driving a white BMW X5.

“In the Audi, there was one person, and in the Mahindra, apparently there were four security personnel. They were attacked by suspects driving a white BMW, who fired shots at them,” said Nevhuhulwi.

BMW getaway car found abandoned

Police confirmed that the BMW used in the attack was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene, and it has been seized for forensic analysis.

“At the moment, the motive is still unclear, but it is suspected that it might be taxi-related, since the victims involved in this shooting are members of a local taxi association,” Nevhuhulwi added.

The incident also caused a secondary crash, when one of the vehicles in the convoy lost control and collided with another car, leaving two civilians injured.

Rising wave of taxi assassinations

The attack comes just weeks after National Taxi Alliance (NTA) chairperson Thamsanqa Moyo was gunned down along the Soweto Highway in a similar hit-style shooting. Police said Moyo was ambushed by suspects travelling in a minibus taxi and a Toyota Yaris before being fatally shot.

Police have launched a double murder and attempted murder investigation, with the provincial taxi violence unit leading the case.

“Our taxi violence unit is actively investigating. We currently have around 20 taxi-related cases before the courts, and this one will also be handled by the provincial taxi violence unit,” Nevhuhulwi said.

Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information to come forward as the province grapples with what appears to be an escalating turf war among rival taxi associations.
