Delft Turns Deadly: Gunmen Spray Bullets, Kill Taxi Boss And Female Passenger

A senior figure within the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA) was fatally shot alongside a woman in what is believed to be a calculated attack in Delft South on Monday night.

The incident unfolded close to the Palm taxi rank, where the rank manager was reportedly travelling in his vehicle when gunmen opened fire. Both victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene.

Initial findings indicate the attack may have been deliberate, with the victims allegedly ambushed while driving near the rank.

Delft Police Probe Double Murder as Cartridge Count Shocks

Authorities have launched a double murder investigation following the deadly shooting. The scale of the attack has raised alarm, with reports indicating that 85 R5 cartridges and 13 9mm cartridges were recovered from the scene.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the details of the incident: “Delft police responded to a complaint of a shooting on Monday evening, 16 March 2026, at about 20:15, near the Palm taxi rank, Delft South, and upon arrival on the scene, they found a 50-year-old male and an adult female who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies.

“Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. According to reports, the victims were driving in a silver Toyota Fortuner when they were approached by unknown suspects who shot them before fleeing the scene.

“The motive for the attack is believed to be taxi-related.”

Detectives in Delft are continuing their investigation as they work to identify the perpetrators.

Rising Taxi Violence Sparks Fear After Recent Killings

CODETA spokesperson Nceba Enge confirmed that the deceased man, identified as Lingani, was affiliated with the association. However, he declined to speculate on who might be responsible for the attack, saying it could involve rival operators, internal disputes, or other forces.

The latest killings come just days after another deadly incident at the same taxi rank on 12 March, where three people lost their lives. Among them were a CODETA member, a taxi owner linked to the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), and an innocent bystander.

The string of violent incidents has heightened concerns over ongoing tensions within the taxi industry in the area.
