Tax Trouble: Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s Husband Faces 102 Charges In Court

The husband of renowned singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka has appeared in court facing more than 100 tax-related charges.

Dr Leonard Mandlalele Mhinga, 73, appeared before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s Husband Accused of Failing to Submit Tax Returns

According to the State, Mhinga allegedly failed to meet his legal obligations to submit income tax and Value-Added Tax (VAT) returns to the South African Revenue Service over several years.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the charges relate to an extended period of non-compliance.

“It is further alleged that this conduct was unlawful and, in certain instances, wilful, resulting in multiple charges under South African tax legislation.

“During proceedings, the defence indicated its intention to submit representations to the State. The matter has been postponed to 06 May 2026 for the outcome of these representations,” Mohlatlole said.

The State alleges that Mhinga failed to submit income tax returns between 2007 and 2022, as well as VAT returns from 2009 to 2023.

Case Postponed as Defence Prepares Representations

During the court appearance, Mhinga’s legal team signalled plans to make representations to the prosecution.

The matter has been postponed to May for the State to consider these submissions. Mohlatlole said the National Prosecuting Authority remains committed to enforcing compliance with tax laws and holding individuals accountable.

In a separate matter, businessman Tshepo Khoza was sentenced to six years’ direct imprisonment in December last year for tax-related offences.

Khoza, director of Grey Apple Trading Enterprise, was found guilty of fraud and failing to register for VAT, in violation of the Tax Administration Act.

Investigating Directorate Against Corruption spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the conviction followed collaboration between law enforcement agencies and SARS.

Authorities said the case involved tenders linked to the South African Police Service, which were allegedly secured through family connections to a senior official.
