While delivering an inspiring speech at Spelman College’s 2025 Commencement Ceremony, Taraji tried to sprinkle some African wisdom, but instead ended up mixing facts.

She described a powerful ritual by the Babemba people where an offender is placed in the center of a village and bombarded with positive affirmations, an act of healing through community support. The problem? The tribe is Zambian, not South African. And South Africans did not take that lightly.

An X user, @Hlovo, posted the clip with a confused caption, triggering a flood of reactions.
@SuperXolani didn’t hold back:

“Maybe she meant Southern Africa, not South Africa. The Babemba (Bemba) tribe is in Zambia, not in RSA.”
