Table Mountain National Park Records Significant Progress Despite Fires Fierce

Table Mountain National Park records significant progress in containing the devastating blaze that has ravaged parts of Newlands Ravine after several days of fierce fires.

This fire, which initially broke out on Sunday morning, led to widespread concerns as it spread rapidly due to strong winds, forcing emergency crews to deploy firefighting resources both on the ground and from the air.

On Thursday, firefighting teams had successfully contained the fires in the Newlands Ravine and Redhill areas, where ground operations had been intensified. Areas previously considered inaccessible due to rugged terrain were also brought under control.

As of now, the fire has scorched approximately 640 hectares in the Redhill to Kommetjie area and another 139 hectares in the Newlands Ravine to Tafelberg Road section of the park.

Despite the encouraging progress, smoke from the fires was reported to be drifting into nearby urban areas, prompting some concern among residents. However, SANParks (South African National Parks) has urged the public to remain calm and follow safety guidelines.

Several popular hiking trails, including the Platteklip Gorge and Kloof Corner trails, were temporarily closed during the crisis. Fortunately, these trails have now reopened to the public as the danger from the flames has subsided.

However, precautionary measures are still in place for certain areas, which will remain closed until further notice. These include:

SANParks Senior Communications Manager, Charles Phahlane, emphasised the importance of adhering to these closures. “The continued presence of hikers in areas closed off due to fire damage and active fire operations remains a concern. “We urge the public to strictly adhere to all trail closures for their safety,” Phahlane said.

In a concerning development, City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security MMC, JP Smith, suggested that foul play could have been involved in starting the fire.Visual evidence collected by authorities indicated that the blaze appeared to have been ignited near a deserted road, raising suspicions of arson.

Smith confirmed that the city’s management is working to compile all evidence for SANParks to launch a forensic investigation and possibly pursue a criminal case.

“The suspicion and circumstances around these incidents are cause for concern,” Smith said. “We must caution those attempting to mislead the public about the capabilities of our Fire and Rescue Service.”

SANParks expressed gratitude to the many organizations that assisted in the firefighting efforts. These include the TMNP Fire Management Team, NCC Wildfires, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Working on Fire, Provincial Disaster Management, Enviro Wildfire Services, and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services. Their collective efforts have played a pivotal role in containing the fires and preventing further destruction.
